Ceph Troubleshooting Module 3

Module 3

Hands-on Ceph troubleshooting day: diagnose real faults from croit’s support queue on your own cluster, then see how support engineers worked each case.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites

Ceph Deployment, or solid operational experience with a running cluster. You should be able to read ceph status and know what a PG is.

A day of faults, on your own cluster. Each scenario starts with a symptom and nothing else. You diagnose it yourself first, then we walk through how croit support would have worked the same case — what they look at, in what order, and which obvious reading of the evidence is wrong.

The scenarios are built from recurring cases in croit's support queue, not invented for the classroom. Faults are injected from outside the cluster, so there is nothing on the machines to give the answer away.

Who it is for

Engineers on call for a Ceph cluster, or anyone who will be the first to look when it misbehaves.

What you will be able to do

  • Work from a symptom to a cause using the cluster's own evidence, rather than by guessing
  • Tell a Ceph-side problem from a network-side one
  • Read PG states, health codes, logs and metrics as a diagnostic chain
  • Recover placement groups from a failed OSD
  • Judge when a case is worth escalating, and arrive with the right evidence attached

Format

Repeating scenarios of growing difficulty. Brief context, independent diagnosis, guided walkthrough, debrief. Clusters are rolled back between scenarios, so a mistake costs nothing.

Scenario areas

  • Slow OSDs surfacing as client-side errors, traced back to the disk
  • Ceph-internal slowdown combined with a genuine network fault
  • Uneven load across RGW instances
  • Uneven data distribution in a growing pool
  • Placement group recovery: exporting a PG from a down OSD and importing it elsewhere
  • Further scenarios as time allows

Materials provided

  • Digital documentation for every session.
  • A virtual training centre with your own lab environment for the duration of the course.

Technical requirements

  • A stable, high-speed internet connection: at least 25 Mbit/s downstream and 5 Mbit/s upstream.
  • A computer that runs a modern web browser, for access to the lab.
  • A headset, or a microphone with speakers, to take part in discussions and Q&A.
  • A webcam is recommended; it makes the session more personal and interactive.

How booking works

  1. 1 Register, and tell us whether you need a purchase order.
  2. 2 Your invoice arrives within one working day and appears in your croit portal, where you can pay it by card or bank transfer.
  3. 3 Places are allocated in order of payment. If a run fills first, we offer you the next available date.
  4. 4 Joining details, the final schedule and your lab access arrive about a week before the start.

Questions before you book

Classes are capped at 18 participants so every question gets answered and the lab stays hands-on. A date runs once it has 4 paid bookings, and is then marked as guaranteed to run. If a date does not reach its minimum, it is rescheduled to the next available date and every booking moves with it.

There is no checkout on the website. Registering places an order; your invoice arrives within one working day and appears in your croit portal, where you can pay by card or bank transfer. Places are allocated in order of payment, so paying promptly secures your date. If a run fills first, we offer you the next available date.

Yes. Say so when you register and you receive a quote instead of an invoice, ready for procurement. Send us the purchase order number once you have it and we invoice against it. A purchase order usually takes three to six weeks to clear, so for a run starting sooner than that we may suggest a later date.

All prices are quoted excluding VAT. Businesses in Germany are invoiced with 19% German VAT. Businesses elsewhere in the EU with a valid VAT ID are invoiced net under the reverse-charge rule, and businesses outside the EU are invoiced without German VAT. Enter your VAT ID when you register so the invoice is right the first time.

croit, a founding member of the Ceph Foundation, issues an official certificate of completion at the end of the course.

A computer with a modern web browser and a stable connection, at least 25 Mbit/s downstream and 5 Mbit/s upstream, plus a headset or a microphone with speakers. A webcam is recommended. The lab runs in our virtual training centre, so nothing is installed on your machine.

We add dates through the year, and run private group trainings for teams. Tell us what you need and we will find a solution.
